Da 5 Bloods - Review

Reposted from Instagram

This 25th SPIKE LEE JOINT (Feature Film) is really long, but really good!

This is what I tweeted before we saw ANY footage “before we see a trailer, I’m REALLY looking forward to this because I think #Netflix opened their wallets for Spike 💰💰💰 and a FULLY BUDGETED Spike Lee Joint is usually a dope #SpikeLeeJoint👊🏾” and boy was I right! 💰💰💰

The filmmaking in this picture was off the meters! Let’s start with cinematographer NEWTON THOMAS SIGEL, the visuals, the shots, the scope, the lighting was terrific! From the GRAND to the intimate, SIGEL straight kills it.

Also killing it is Spike’s long time #composer collaborator #TerenceBlanchard 🎺. I thought the #FilmScore (🎼original music written specifically to accompany a film🎶) was outstanding. Again, from the grand to the intimate.

The story was good and as usual is peppered with lots of historical tidbits relating to this story of black folks in military service, but at its core was really about family, guilt and forgiveness.

The acting across the board was off the meters. Starting with the #1 blood CHADWICK BOSEMAN who plays da leader of da Bloods “Stormin’ Norman”. For storyline reasons he’s not in the picture a lot, but when he is he’s terrific! Another terrific performance from him. The other Bloods CLARKE PETERS, ISIAH WHITLOCK JR. and NORM LEWIS were all great! The “son of a blood” JONATHAN MAJORS was also great. The performance of the picture though was no surprise to anyone that saw him in anything was DELROY LINDO—WOW was he magnificent in this role!

Delroy Lindo in Da 5 Bloods

I’m going to say it, I hope he gets an Oscar nomination for this role—as LEAD ACTOR! He has been a terrific actor for decades and THIS ROLE should deliver him unto Oscar. Another masterful performance from this veteran actor.

Lastly, #MadProps to the #MainMan SPIKE LEE 🎬for crafting another great Joint! DA 5 BLOODS was terrific! Absolutely one of the best pictures of the year! As he would say, the Year of our Lord Two Thousand and Twenty.👊🏾

The film is on Netflix RIGHT NOW! I •LIVE•TWEETED• the picture with pics, gifs and video 'Nother Brother Entertainment on Twitter in a thread 🧵 linked in the tweet below

Gentefied - Season One Review

I absolutely LOVED this series!

To be clear,  I was seeing tweets and such about the series weeks before it premiered and meeting one of the Producers at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, I was GOING TO watch it! What I did not know was how much I would love it.

THE STORY: Gentefied centers on three cousins who band together to keep their Grandfather's popular Boyle Heights [Los Angeles] taco shop in business as the neighborhood becomes more gentrified.

Throughout the show's first season the cousins confront their differences in their connections to their community, their heritage, and their commitment to the family business, all while navigating larger themes of gentrification and the marginalization of Latinx's in America.—#IMDb

That IMDb synopsis is pretty on point, what it does not point out, why I’m here🙋🏾‍♂️, is how you fall in love with this family and their various stories.

The writing is so on point as it infuses Latinx culture into a great family drama that’s not about gangs or some other negative trope that Hollywood loves to focus on, but about survival in the hood amid gentrification and other economic factors.

The performances from the multi-generational cast across the board was terrific—TERRIFIC! I’m not going to list them individually because they ALL did fantastic jobs. They performed superbly in #Spanglish and alternating between English and Spanish within the same scene and mostly within the same line of dialogue. The actors performances really made you fall in love with their characters.

Plain and simple, Congratulations to the ENTIRE Cast & Crew of 'Gentefied' Y’all made a PERFECT season of television. For la cultura👌🏾

The entire season is on Netflix right now!

I Live Tweeted the season in a thread starting with the tweet below

When They See Us - Review and Live Tweets

Below is my review on Instagram

#WhenTheySeeUs Review: I don’t know what to say. It was excellent, but to say I “enjoyed it” is a total misnomer. This film, presented as a Four (4) Part Limited Series, was IMPACTFUL. From the moment the arrests happen you are WITH these five boys. And that’s WTF they were—BOYS! Young males of other races are “snips and snails and puppy dog tails”, but young males of color are considered more mature than they are even when even accused of a crime without proof—considered monsters. WTSU makes you FEEL what these boys are feeling. This film takes a HARD, UNFLINCHING look at what these boys and eventual men went through in the legal system and didn’t sugarcoat shit! I’ve done MY OWN research on the so-called “Central Park Five” before I even saw this and AVA DUVERNAY et al, her cast and crew NAILED their traumatic journey. And that shit WAS traumatic. For real I was like “Shit! Is anything GOOD gonna happen in this film? Damn sis! Can I breathe?” Not really and I think that was the intent. Oh you’re gonna feel this shit. As usual I gotta talk about the filmmaking. Starting with Director and Co-Writer AVA DUVERNAY, she and the other credited writers JULIAN BREECE, ROBIN SWICORD, ATTICA LOCKE and MICHAEL STARRBURY as stated, took you THERE! Cinematographer extraoidinarre BRADFORD YOUNG shot the hell out of it with lots of flair and oft times gourgeous shots. The acting, wow the acting. WOW the acting. The five young men and four older men (one played both versions) did tremendous jobs as did the actors that played their family members. I’m running out of space here, but I’ll will list them on Twitter. Suffice it to say, bravo.👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I binged watched all four parts in one sitting (a rarity for me) and •LIVE•TWEETED• the whole thing so a lot of the cast and crew are already mentioned. (I’ll post the thread🧵 at the Link in my BIO) Lastly, I highly recommend WHEN THEY SEE US, but ⚠️Caution⚠️ and I can’t state enough, YOU WILL FEEL. You will. Every.moment. 100%

Luke Cage Season One Review with *Live Tweets*

I posted the full review on Instagram, but I'll repost the full review below (hence the hashtags) with a link to the live tweets I did while watching the series with the other diverse folk on Twitter as well. Check it all out below.

THE SHOWRUNNER, THE VIBE
In separate interviews #showrunner #CheoHodariCoker describes the show as "the Wu Tang-ification of the Marvel universe”, as having "a '90s hip-hop vibe." and ""The Wire of Marvel television" I can say all statements are absolutely TRUE!

I'll throw in a badass #blaxpoitation vibe too! Lots of time when Cage takes a "Step in the Arena" (the #Gangstarr inspired title of episode 4) you can hear Cage's #leitmotif (theme song) and you know some ass-kicking is coming!

This show not only OOZES in #BlackCulture and #BlackHistory it's also #UnapologeticallyBlack ✊🏾The characters talk how black people talk and act like black people act. The nuances of black culture and black life are EVERYWHERE in this show. The literary 📚references/discussions📚 alone are rooted in black history/culture.

#MikeColter is a great solid Luke Cage. He plays Cage as the strong, silent type. He's strong and silent, but can definitely be smooth when it comes to the ladies.👌🏾He really just wants to lay low, but the love of his people, his community forces him into action. For those that don't know Luke Cage has unbreakable skin and super strength so yeah he does some superhero type shit, but it's all grounded in reality—a black reality—in a black Harlem.

HARLEMWORLD
I joked that this show could be called "Harlem featuring Luke Cage" because that's how much of a character Harlem is. As @djolder said on Twitter "one thing #LukeCage did in the span of a single episode that neither DareDevil nor Jessica Jones managed was create a sense of community" Harlem and its residents are a real vibrant part of the series and remains so the entire season. Most of the villains on the show love Harlem first and foremost.

OH THE VILLAINY
Speaking of villains, like the other Marvel/Netflix shows, the villains are about the best thing on the show, from #MariahDillard to #Cottonmouth to #Shades, they all BRING IT! Their portrayers #AlfreWoodard, #MahershalaAli and #TheoRossi consistently kill it!

THE WOMEN OF LUKE CAGE
#ClaireTemple re-emerges in this series and has A LOT to do and #RosarioDawson continues to do it well! #MistyKnight (played by the fantastic #SimoneMissick) who spawned the #MistySoLit hashtag before the show even premiered is a HUGE part of the show. Shit, the show could also be called "Luke Cage & Misty Knight" LOL. She's definitely the standout she was predicted to be. Actually the show has SEVERAL female characters that make an impact, not just hanging around. They affect the story.

IN THE END
I think this season is gonna become a hood pop culture classic, in other words—a hit in these streets. That's the true way to reach the culture. Much like 'Scarface' (1983) some of the characters in Luke Cage are energetic, bombastic and audacious—which also make them great and memorable. As #PopCulture critic JOHN POWERS said "If there's any quality that makes a piece of pop culture last, it's energy." All I kept thinking watching Luke Cage was "the streets gonna love❤️this!" And with all the Black History drops that's exactly how it's supposed to be. Marvel/Netflix has another distinct hit on their hands and this time it's also #ForTheCulture 👊🏾###

I also •LIVE•TWEETED• the season @notherbrother on Twitter. You can check out the thread starting with the tweet below.

Magna Carta Holy Grail - The Cool Black Review

MAGNA CARTA HOLY GRAIL

Before I start, some background.

On June 16 during the fifth game of the 2013 NBA Finals, Jay-Z was featured in a new commercial by Samsung where he announced that his twelfth studio album would be titled, Magna Carta Holy Grail and would be released on July 4, 2013. He was seen speaking to producer Rick Rubin in the studio about the album saying, "The album is about, like this duality of how do you navigate through this whole thing, through success, through failures, through all this and remain yourself." The commercial featured producers that are confirmed to be on the album including Timbaland, Swizz Beatz and Pharrell Williams. The album was available for free download on July 4, 12:01 a.m. EST, to the first one million Samsung mobile device users via an app. —Wikipedia

Watch that spot below.

I was watching that fifth game of the 2013 NBA Finals when that commercial came on and in the subsequent days when the online hype reached a fever pitch I posted the below on social media.

Let me tell you about this #MagnaCarta. I'm a Jay-Z fan, I bought his last Ep #LiveInBrooklyn and will probably buy this new one, no frontin, BUT let me be clear unless he was holding them for this album Hov's mic skills have fell the f*ck OFF! I can't remember the last time I heard a Hov verse and said "YOOOO that was the sh*t!" I mean the best MC on #WatchTheThrone wasn't Hov. Let's keep it real. Bringing in all these superstar producers? *Yawn*  I'm not a fan of JUST hot beats I'm a fan of wicked rhymes and effortless spitting. Give me the complete package or don't do it!  I'm still a fan, but don't expect me to fall for the okey doke because you got some other stars on the album. If that's it he needs to as his t-shirt says #GoHome.
Well it seems like hot beats may be enough because I have to admit MCHG was one of the best hip hop albums of summer 2013. As stated MCHG has some superstar producers and the beats aren’t just hot, they’re smoking hot!

From the album opening Holy Grail featuring Justin Timberlake to the old school sounding beats of Picasso Baby (both produced by Timbaland) the album don’t stop with the hot tracks.

Pharrell comes through with the bangers Oceans (featuring Frank Ocean) and BBC featuring NaS, but it is Timbaland that reigns heavy over MCHG. Timbaland worked on 7 out the 14 songs, an astounding SIX of those seven are HOT! It has to be said that Timbaland has co-credits on most of these songs, but most of them he has “chief credit”.

Among the best Timbaland songs are the best use of a Biggie sample I’ve ever heard on JAY Z Blue. The song cleverly blends samples from "My Downfall" by The Notorious B.I.G. with Jay-Z’s vocals. Timbaland also produced the R&B sounding Part II (On the Run) featuring Beyoncé that is mostly R&B, but a great “sequel” to Hov & B’s 03 Bonnie & Clyde. The other HOT tracks Timbaland worked on were the aforementioned Oceans and FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt.

In the end, Hov’s rhymes aren’t as innovative as they used to be, but they’re good enough to still make hot songs and in this case one of the hottest albums of the summer. I really have to say that. After giving much shade and skepticism over the way he announced the album, I think he deserves as much.

Below is what I thought were the HOT tracks.

1. Holy Grail (featuring Justin Timberlake) HOT
2. Picasso Baby HOT
3. Tom Ford HOT
4. FuckWithMeYouKnowIGotIt (featuring Rick Ross) HOT
5. Oceans (featuring Frank Ocean) HOT
6. F.U.T.W.
7. Somewhereinamerica
8. Crown warm
9. Heaven
10. Versus (interlude)
11. Part II (On the Run) (featuring Beyoncé) HOT
12. Beach Is Better (interlude)
13. BBC (featuring NaS) HOT
14. JAY Z Blue HOT
15. La Familia
16. Nickels and Dimes warm

The Emperor Jones — Cool Black Review

THE EMPEROR JONES

StarringPaul Robeson

Release date(s)September 29, 1933
SYNOPSIS
Unscrupulously ambitious Brutus Jones escapes from jail after killing a guard
and through bluff and bravado finds himself the emperor of a Caribbean island.

Cool Black Review
I’ve always wanted to see a Paul Robeson movie and the passage below from the book Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks: An Interpretive History of Blacks in American Films by Donald Bogle provided the impetus.

Now as you can see the plot sounds gotdamn ridiculous. I was like wow, what a whirlwind of a plot and yes all of that happened.

The 1933 film itself is of course dated, but it had an audacious performance by Paul Robeson who of course sings several songs in the film. The acting was big and broad, but that was the style of the day. If you’re a fan of the old pictures this one was a decent one and you get a chance to see a pioneering performer. Without Robeson there would be no great African American performers of today.

Cool Black Mad Commentary:
Wikipedia states:
A stint on the chain gang allows the film its first opportunity to show Robeson without his shirt on, an exposure of male nudity unusual for 1933 and certainly for a black actor.
I too was surprised at this. That was only the first of many opportunities Robeson bared his chest.  As explained in the Bogle book and from my lifetime of watching film, the black male is usually “neutered” on film. The black male is never as “naked” as his white counterparts, but here in the 1930s was this big, black man shirtless. Applause to all that were involved in putting this film out for I know it couldn’t have been easy.

Brooklyn Castle — Cool Black Review

BROOKLYN CASTLE
Directed by Katie Dellamaggiore
Produced by Katie Dellamaggiore, Nelson Dellamaggiore and Brian Schulz
Cinematography by Brian Schulz
Editing by Nelson Dellamaggiore
Release date(s): March 11, 2012 (South by Southwest Film Festival), October 19, 2012 (United States)

Synopsis
Amidst financial crises and unprecedented public school budget cuts, Brooklyn
Castle takes an intimate look at the challenges and triumphs facing members of a junior high school's champion chess team. – IMDb

Cool Black Review
No "Rocky" type story here. While there were triumphs there sure were lows as
this team strived to win and indeed "amidst financial crises".

The film captures the years of the chess players RIGHT when the financial crisis hit the United States (2008-2010). So between trying to you know win, they also had to get around the country to major chess tournaments. The filmmakers do a great job at explaining the whole chess tournament system and how each player is ranked.

Focusing on a core set of players and following them over their time at I.S. (Intermediate or "middle” or “junior high” School) and you witness their highs, lows and some of their lives at home without dwelling too much on one or the other. A perfect balance.

Brooklyn Castle is a really wonderful documentary that not only can explain competition chess to someone who had NO IDEA what it’s all about, like me, but also manages to highlight some really great kids and the most important things in their lives—chess!

Hatfields & McCoys - The Cool Black Review

Kevin Costner (left) and Bill Paxton (right) as their characters in Hatfields & McCoys

I liked Hatfields & McCoys, a good old fashion tale of revenge. This feud proves that war is war no matter what scale it’s waged on. While it got a little melodramatic at times this was a good miniseries especially if you like westerns.
Hatfields & McCoys is a three-part 2012 television miniseries based on the Hatfield–McCoy feud produced by History channel. Each episode aired for two hours on May 28, 29, and 30, 2012 and starred Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton as the chief Hatfield & McCoy respectfully.
The entire cast of characters, and there were an entire cast of characters on both sides of the feud were really good, replete with their country twang, but Kevin Costner did an outstanding job as the chief Hatfield “William Anderson "Devil Anse" Hatfield”

Apart from the story I was amazed at the total authenticity of the miniseries. The miniseries had really great direction by Kevin Reynolds and outstanding cinematography by Arthur Reinhart, outdoor cinematography—in the woods—day and night! (For the record it’s kind of hard to balance light outside especially at night)

I also have to mention the other components of the crew that lead to the miniseries’ authenticity. Production Design by Derek R. Hill, Art Direction by Serban Porupca and John B. Vertrees, Set Decoration by Sally Black, Costume Design by Karri Hutchinson and the 11 people in Makeup.

These were the grungiest country folk you ever seen in your life, but it was due to their rural lives of the 1800s. Because of the great work of the people I mentioned above you were transported to that time of the 1800s and believed every second of it. Without their painstaking authenticity the miniseries wouldn't have been as good as it was.

My Top Ten Films of 2012

Blog Post #15

My Top Ten list of my favorite films of 2012 are just that. These are films that affected me and gave me a pure cinematic experience! Some of these films I wasn't even checking for like that, but good word of mouth got me to see them and WOW was the word of mouth correct.  Even though there are a couple of films released in 2012 that I have yet to see, these are the best of what I did see as of this publishing.

The below list consists of films released in 2012 and in some cases my review or additional comments on the films are linked.

I’ve listed the films from ten to one as my favorites and at least seven of these films are EXCELLENT! The other three are very good, so good that out of ALL the dozens of new films I’ve seen in 2012 they made the Top Ten.

___________________________________________________

10. THE GREY
Liam Neeson was great again in this fantastic unconventional thriller. The “villains” are not who you think, but Liam is definitely a hero. A great tale of survival.

9. Looper
I didn't even want to see this film despite liking the main stars. I’ve been a science fiction fan long enough to have seen every paradox about time travel that you can think of, but this film managed to take a unique slant on it. The performances were really great too!

8. End of Watch
This was another film that flew under my radar. Again, I thought I’d seen enough “cop movies” and this one didn’t look like it offered anything new, but it did. The film was gritty and excellent!

7. Think Like a Man
Hilariously funny and romantic. All of the several couples in the film are likable and the movie is definitely one of the best of the year.
—>Read my full review here

6. The Avengers
Who would have thought that after much build up that the “sequel” to all those solo superhero movies would be not good, but excellent. Writer/Director Joss Whedon crafted the perfect superhero movie!

5. Compliance
A disturbingly excellent film that did not use gore, special effects or jump cuts to make you sick. All it did was have great acting and dialogue. An excellent film from 2012 that you might not have heard of.
—>Read my full review here

4. Middle of Nowhere
This film came out of Sundance in January 2012 with all kinds of accolades that I thought couldn’t possibly measure up to my high scrutiny, but it did. An excellent motion picture that had a limited theatrical release that you should see when it becomes available.
—>Read my full review here

3. Prometheus
An excellent film that NO ONE got. Well mostly no one. The biggest mistake on the audience’s part was expecting this to be a prequel to Alien despite the director and everyone involved saying it was NOT. That coupled with several ambiguous plot elements left the audience hollow. I got everything the picture was trying to say and accepted the things it did not. The film was still one of the spectacular films you will see from 2012
—>Read my full and EXPANSIVE review here

2. Argo
This is the perfect Hollywood movie. An excellent movie. The fact that it involved Hollywood didn’t hurt none. I wrote more in my day after enthusiasm post Why ‘Argo’ Might Walk Away with it ALL at The Oscars here

1. Beasts of the Southern Wild
My favorite film of 2012 had to have been the one that moved me the most. Watching this film was a reminder of the power of cinema to me. A phenomenal film.

The Central Park Five - The Cool Black Review

THE CENTRAL PARK FIVE

Synopsis: The Central Park Five is a 2012 documentary film about the Central Park Jogger case, where five juvenile males—four black and one Hispanic—were tried and convicted for the assault and rape of a female jogger in New York City's Central Park. The film was directed by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns, and David McMahon. It was released in the US on November 23, 2012

REVIEW by Cool Black
If you like Ken Burns’ work you’ll definitely like this. The film wasn’t as “cinematic” as I would have liked instead playing like a short version of Burns usually PBS fare (which can usually run four hours or more). As expected Burns’ use of archival footage and new “transition footage” was impeccable and in the end Central Park Five is a really great documentary that makes for compelling viewing at times.

Cool Black’s Mad Commentary: Because of new voting procedures (described in more detail at Deadline where you can also see the shortlist of eligible films here) The Central Park Five WILL NOT be in consideration for the Academy Award for Best Documentary.
“I’m truly baffled by this; Not that none of the 15 films listed below aren’t worthy (I haven’t seen them all); but I can say that of those I have seen (more about half) on this list, I think The Central Park Five most certainly belongs, and I’d say is even stronger than some of them,” write Shadow and Act’s Tambay A. Obensen.
Unlike Mr. Obenson, of the films on the shortlist I’ve only seen one, Bully, and The Central Park Five was indeed better than that. Again, I didn’t think it was that “cinematic”, but I admit I haven’t kept much of a tab on the Best Documentary category throughout the years and I assume the Academy voters know better than I.
